It was a car commercial on TV.
Their tag line was, “The best available in its price range.” Unbelievable! They
weren’t the best or the worst, but they had value. Who brags about that? We’re
not the best you can buy, but among other things, we’re a good value. I started
thinking about it. Hell, they were talking about my freaking life!
Of Mystics and Misfits… It took a
long time before I realized I had a value. I was always above average in every endeavor.
Looking back, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. I wasn’t in the spot light
for being the best at anything, and then again I escaped the shame of being the
worst. Above average was OK. I was dyslexic and could barely read, and
diagnosed as ADD, so hardly anything could keep my attention. Up until I was 24
years old, I’d probably read six or seven books all the way through and they
were all non-fiction. I couldn’t memorize anything. If you remember anything it
stays with a dyslexic like me for life. How in the hell did I ever make it out
of High School. Some dumb luck and some innovative cheat sheets are how. Ironic
that after dropping out of four colleges I went back at age 30 and got a
freaking degree in Journalism.
I was an above average student,
above average swimmer, above average boxer and thank God I had some good
coaches to tell me when it was time to quit, or have a messed up brain and face.
I was a good groom and assistant starter at the racetrack. Wasn’t the best, but
then I began to understand the TV ad. I did have value. Best available in this
price range really did mean something. Miscellaneous retail jobs and I did have
value. If someone asked or told me that I was good, I’d respond. I’m not the
very best, but you wouldn’t be able to afford the very best. But, I’m the best
available in this price range.
After my accident and I figured
my gift was not a curse, I explored the options of helping people heal. Heal from
disabling grief and give them hope. I studied with the best mediums in the
world for seven years. It is actually something that I exceled at. To be the best
of the best is always a goal, but I think it’s more important to give people
their money’s worth. Could I charge more for my talents, sure, but why? Isn’t
okay to give people their monies worth? It has to be a trade out or there is no
value in something that can’t be seen or heard. Dollar for dollar, for peace of
mind and proof that your loved ones can never die and they can hear and see you
whenever you ask or they want. What’s that worth to you?
Who would have ever thought that
old car commercial had any merit. Best available in its price range. Always try
to be the best, but always recognize your value!
